The Aspirant Prosecutor Programme: Details

Position: Aspirant Prosecutor
Salary Range: R239,673 – R277,341 per annum (LP-1 to LP-2)

This prestigious 12-month programme will provide participants with hands-on experience in legal practice, focusing on prosecution. The training is rigorous, designed to instill a deep understanding of legal principles, courtroom procedures, and the ethical responsibilities that come with being a prosecutor. Upon successful completion, candidates may be appointed as prosecutors within various NPA offices nationwide.

Training Centres

Each training centre is equipped to provide participants with a comprehensive legal training experience, encompassing both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Aspirant Prosecutor Training Programme, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: Applicants must have completed an LLB degree or possess an equivalent foreign qualification, with proof of accreditation from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Final-year LLB students may also apply, provided they will complete their degree before the programme’s start date.
  • Employment Status: Applicants must be unemployed and should not have any prior legal experience. Additionally, they should not have participated in any Practical Vocational Training (PVT) for legal practitioners.
  • Nationality: Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Professional Conduct: Candidates must exhibit the ability to act independently, professionally, and with accountability. They should possess a credible professional demeanor, aligning with the values upheld by the NPA.

Duties and Responsibilities

Selected candidates will embark on an intensive 12-month training programme that blends practical experience with rigorous assessments. The programme is designed to prepare candidates for appointment as prosecutors, equipping them with the necessary skills to handle cases effectively and uphold the principles of justice.

Throughout the programme, aspirant prosecutors will be required to:

  • Adhere to the NPA’s Code of Conduct.
  • Follow Policy Directives issued by the National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Upon successful completion of the training, candidates may be placed in various NPA offices across the country, depending on the organization’s needs. It is important to note that declining a permanent placement offer may result in the termination of the contract, emphasizing the commitment required to join the NPA as a prosecutor.
